ILMxLAB’s latest virtual reality experience, Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge, extends and expands the world of Batuu and Black Spire Outpost like never before. And just as Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, the epic immersive lands at Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World Resort, introduced new characters and locations into the Star Wars galaxy, the same is true with Tales. In this series, we’ll introduce you to some of the new residents — and travellers — you’ll run into during your adventures on Batuu.
STEP INTO YOUR ROLE
The magic of Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge is that it allows you to live out your own adventure as you explore the planet Batuu. But who are you in the experience, exactly? The idea of an ordinary person being drawn into extraordinary events is at the heart of Star Wars, and it’s something you’ll be able to experience the moment you step into Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge.
You assume the role of a droid repair technician, who grew up on Batuu in a small village far from the bustle of Black Spire Outpost. When you were younger you were frustrated by living on a small world near the Outer Rim, and dreamed of seeking your fortune elsewhere — perhaps on Coruscant, or one of the other exotic worlds you’d heard about from the smugglers and rogues that passed through Batuu.
You eventually found yourself working with Mubo, proprietor of the Droid Depot, where you began an unlikely apprenticeship as he taught you some of his droid-repairing skills. Eventually he offered you a chance to finally go off-world — your dream! — as a crew member on one of his transport ships. What you didn’t realize was that working for Mubo wouldn’t be quite as glamorous as you’d hoped, as you ferried droid parts from around the galaxy… and back to Batuu.
That doesn’t mean your thirst for adventure has abated, however. Even now, as you walk the corridors of Mubo’s transport, you still dream of one day being able to make a difference in the galaxy…
THE TOOLS OF AN UNLIKELY HERO
Your droid repair tools will prove to be incredibly useful as you make your way through Batuu. While you’ll discover a number of different items along your journey, these are the ones you find most important.
All-Kit: Your All-Kit tool has three functions: a torque wrench, an arc probe, and a fusion cutter. It will provide helpful in a number of situations, whether it’s repairing a remote in the middle of combat, hotwiring a broken blaster door, or slicing open a supply container.
Bacta Spray: If your health gets too low, just use Bacta Spray. Each container holds two doses, and you can keep one stashed on your wrist for easy access.
DataGrip: Your wrist gauntlet tracks your health, receives transmissions, scans objects, and can even show you the way if you get lost.
Hoverpack: Your hoverpack will let you access hard-to-reach places, give you a quick way to avoid enemies, or get a new angle in the midst of combat. You can upgrade your hoverpack by visiting Mubo’s Workshop.
Inventory Pouch: Store everything you find into your handy vest-mounted inventory pouch. It holds a lot more items than you’d think, so be sure to expand the inventory screen whenever you open it.
Marksman-series Remotes: Use a number of modified training remotes throughout your adventures, including a more dangerous version of the classic Marksman-H, a shielded variant, and one that will seek out nearby targets and explode. Just be sure to avoid the blast.
Vest and Visor: Your trusty vest and belt is where you’ll hang your inventory pouch, and any blasters you find along the way. The visor is part of your kit on Mubo’s ship, and it’s how you’ll find and identify various pieces of cargo. Even strange unmarked ones that mysteriously have no database entry in Mubo’s logs.
You can step onto Batuu for yourself in Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge, available now on the Oculus Quest platform.
