ILMxLAB’s latest virtual reality experience, Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge, extends and expands the world of Batuu and Black Spire Outpost like never before. And just as Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, the epic immersive lands at Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World Resort, introduced new characters and locations into the Star Wars galaxy, the same is true with Tales. In this series, we’ll introduce you to some of the new residents — and travelers — you’ll run into during your adventures on Batuu.
“Meet the most skilled droid technician in the outpost! After me, of course.”
Anyone that visits Black Spire Outpost is familiar with the Droid Depot, the go-to shop for buying and building your own droid companion. Keeping the entire operation running is the Depot’s Utai proprietor, Mubo.
A sixth-generation droid builder and technological genius, Mubo loves tinkering in his workshop, repairing and programming the droids used throughout Black Spire Outpost. He also loves to talk about the things he’s passionate about, and is constantly showing off his latest creations. To keep business running smoothly, Mubo employs a handful of technicians and droid pilots, some of his own design, to transport parts to Batuu.
Mubo’s latest droid creation is R00-8Y, a DRK-1 Dark Eye probe droid that he’s programmed to be his own personal assistant. With her own set of modified capabilities, including an odor neutralizer, R00-8Y is now Mubo’s constant companion.
Luckily the Spires kept you safe, and we’re not talking about buying cyborg body parts.
Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge is carefully crafted to be an authentic Star Wars experience, so for Mubo the team turned to the person that voices the character in the Parks: Matthew Wood. A veteran sound editor at Skywalker Sound, Wood has worked on everything from Star Wars: The Phantom Menace to The Mandalorian. But over the course of his career, Wood also developed a career as a voice-over performer, lending his voice to numerous movies and games, including taking on the role of General Grievous in Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith.
Wood also voices Mubo within Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, where those that listen closely in the Droid Depot may just hear him speaking in his native Utai. For Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge, he translated that performance into an entirely different medium. As producer Alyssa Finley puts it, “Matt Wood’s delightfully awkward portrayal of Mubo really brings the character to life,” particularly when players get the chance to meet and interact with him themselves.
You can meet Mubo for yourself in Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge, available November 19th on the Oculus Quest platform.
